Alex Ricklefs is a Project Manager at The Energy Coalition (TEC) who supports program development and implementation, project management, and business development. With 7 years of experience in the clean energy sector, Alex has been integral in a wide range of energy projects from design to post-implementation evaluation. Prior to TEC, Alex worked as a commissioning and building energy analyst for Paladino and Company, working on energy efficiency development and optimization for new construction and existing buildings. Alex received a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA in 2016 and conducted research on experimental building materials for energy efficient designs. He then went to work at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability under Dr. Pincetl, investigating how Californian disadvantaged communities are vulnerable to climate change and high heat events through an analysis of community level energy consumption data and energy policy. Alex has continued to focus disadvantaged communities through is work at TEC through energy efficiency projects, research projects, and program development initiatives. Alex played a key role in the development of the Advanced Energy Community design and will continue to be a central figure in the implementation of the Bassett Avocado Advanced Energy Community project.
Juan Pablo is an electrical and electronics engineer with over 10 years experience developing and manufacturing embedded systems. His vast range of knowledge includes: start-up development, bootstrapping, scaled lean manufacturing, and cloud computing as well as, software development in C++, Java, Verilog, LabVIEW and Python. He is an member of IEEE Power & Energy Society and a Rockstart Smart Energy alumni in the Netherlands where he collaborated with leaders in AMI from Belgium, Germany, and The Netherlands . He is involved in several distributed smart grid projects in Latin-America as a consultant and infrastructure provider.
Since 2014 Juan Pablo has served as chairman and CEO of eGEO Tech, an IOT AMI 2.0 infrastructure company. eGEO has become a preferred option for open distributed metering in various research groups and real-estate developers in Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Spain. A recent eGEO project that has risen to prominence is Isla Mucura, which provides the infrastructure for a real-time micro- ESCO distributed solar grid for over 1.300 inhabitants in Colombia, South America who had previously been living off grid.
Juan Manuel is the director of the Transactive Energy Colombia Initiative at the EIA University in Medellin, Colombia leading two of the first P2P energy trading and community solar pilots in Latin America. Launched alongside EPM, ERCO Energy and UCL (UK), this program is the first of its kind in the region and lays the foundations for the energy transition in Colombia trough applied research, industry cooperation, and entrepreneurship (more info transactive-energy.co). Juan Manuel is advisor for several energy startups and has been working at EIA university as professor and researcher for the last 3 year. He is also a guest lecturer at several universities in Colombia. Juan Manuel’s focus is on innovation, digital technologies and energy prosumers.
Prior to EIA University, Juan Manuel worked as project manager for ME Solshare, the German-Bangladeshi startup that deployed the first commercial P2P energy trading microgrids in rural Bangladesh. During his time at ME SOLshare, Juan Manuel led the development of the digital solutions to enable P2P energy trading and integrate the platform with digital cash solutions. Later, he moved on to leading the fundraising efforts of the company and achieving important milestone such as the Startup Energy Transition Award, the GSMA M4D Grant, Elsevier Renewable Transformation Challenge Award, the UN DESA 2017 grant, the Microsoft Affordable Access Initiative and the Free Electrons Accelerator. Juan Manuel also worked as a consultant and project manager for the German Consutancy MicroEnergy International GmbH, focusing on business modeling and strategic consulting for energy access in the global south. Juan Manuel took part in projects around the world. Juan Manuel started his career in Canadian engineering multinational, SNC Lavalin, as a design engineer and holds a Master’s in International Management from the European School of Management and Technology (Berlin). He also holds a bachelor in Electrical Engineering and another one in Electronics from Los Andes University in Colombia. Juan speaks German, French, Spanish and English.

John concluded an engagement with EV DC fast charging innovator Tritium Technologies in May 2020. Prior, he explored microgrid innovation in 2017 & 2018 with his startups MAAS Energy and Nextenergi. From 2014-2016, John was a principal in the launch of Siemens US Business Transformation Services efforts. In 2013, John served as a management consultant and smart grid subject matter expert at the Siemens North American Smart Grid Center of Competence in New Brunswick, Canada. Earlier that year, John worked with Actionable Strategies on a Smart Grid Roadmap project with Enerjisa Baskent in Ankara, Turkey. In 2012, John worked to create industry-specific solutions for commercial building owners by applying new business models (e.g., nanogrids, microgrids) while at NextWatt Solutions. In 2010 and 2011, John worked with Grid Net, a pioneer Smart Grid software company, and with Sharp Labs to develop business models for virtual power plants. In 2009, John helped his client Xtreme Power, an advanced lead acid energy storage company, to secure a multi-million-dollar federal loan guarantee to implement the first energy storage for renewable energy integration on a wind farm in Maui. Also in 2009, John was a leader in the Pecan Street Project, leading the Smart Grid committee and writing the final technical report. Earlier at Austin Energy, John ran the GENie Project in 2004 and 2005, leading utility management to explore broadband options for utility operations and launching the groundbreaking Smart Grid program. From 2003-2008, John was a Smart Cities consultant, focused on developing and implementing Smart City applications leveraging new wireless technologies. John’s early career in electricity (1996-2000) featured work on pioneer wireless AMR and energy data software at CSW Communications, a subsidiary of Central and South West (now AEP), including one of the first city-wide wireless meter reading projects in the world. John helped launch the Texas Senate Research Center in 1986, serving as director from 1987-1994.
John authored two chapters recently: Quintessential Innovation for Transformation of the Power Sector in Innovation & Disruption At the Grid’s Edge (2017) and The Innovation Platform Enables the Internet of Things in Future of Utilities – Utilities of the Future (2016), John was invited to speak on innovation at OMIE headquarters in Madrid in 2016. John authored two white papers on business transformation while at Siemens: The Art of the Managed Transition and DER Resiliency. John is co-author of the industry best seller The Advanced Smart Grid: Edge Power Driving Sustainability (1E, 2011 & 2E 2015). In 2011, Smart Grid News called The Advanced Smart Grid “…far and away the best book yet about the smart grid.” John’s 2008 book The ABCs of Community Broadband is a guidebook on smart cities for community leaders. John is an accomplished public speaker and has published numerous articles on electricity and broadband innovation in traditional and new media. John has an MBA with honors and a BA in Government from the University of Texas at Austin. John currently resides in Austin, Texas.
Steve graduated Cum Laude from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in 2000 with a Bachelor´s in Mechanical Engineering. He attended RPI on a 50% merit-based scholarship in recognition of his math and science performance in high school. Starting during his third semester, Steve participated in R&D activities at the Center for Automation Technologies as a paid undergrad research assistant. He also spent every summer in different internships, including at Electric Boat in Groton, CT (one of the two US nuclear submarine shipyards) and Boeing Commercial Aircraft in Seattle, as well as a longer (Co-op) positions at NASA´s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA, where he spent a total one year at a half in a planetary robotics development group working on a wide range of projects on mechanical design, finite element analysis, and experimental work. His first patents and publications date to his JPL stay.
After finishing college, he moved to Georgia Institute of Technology to obtain a Master´s in Science of Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Controls Engineering as an RA in the Intelligent Machine Dynamics Lab. His Master´s thesis on controls strategy for a novel haptics display called “Digital Clay”. One of the reasons he chose GATech that they offered him the chance to complete the first year of the masters in France, in an exchange program with the Ecole Superior des Arts et Métiers in Paris. Not only did he get a chance to travel around Europe, but also met his future wife, who is from Spain.
After presenting his Master dissertation in summer of 2003, he moved with his wife to Los Angeles to join The Aerospace Corporation, where he formed a part of the Guidance and Navigation Dept, performing analysis of internal navigation systems for launch vehicles, both for ongoing military launches, as well as helping to evaluate upgrades the Atlas V INU.
However, this was not as fulfilling as hoped, and he began to form an interest in renewable technologies. At the end of 2006 he decided to change industries completely move to San Francisco to work for a VC funded CPV startup, SolFocus, as employee 25. He worked there until 2008 in “Design Engineering” role that encompassed both mechanical design of the actual panels, as well as characterization and data analysis tasks, and leading the engineering team that built the first solar simulator (flasher) for CPV, in collaboration with a group at the Instituto de Energía Solar of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), who had originated the technology, and installing that critical equipment in the first SolFocus production line at Moser Baer, near New Delhi.In 2008, the solar “boom” in Spain was well underway, and SolFocus was making inroads into that market both with their proprietary CPV technology and as a 2-axis solar tracker manufacturer, having acquired the Spanish company Inspira. With Spanish operations ramping up, Steve, who (thanks to his wife) was now fluent in Spanish language and culture, was asked if he would like to transfer to Madrid to act as primary contact between the engineering team in Mountain View and the new tracker engineers in the Madrid office, and decided that this might be an interesting professional opportunity, as well as a sure fire way to make his wife happy. The couple made the move in mid-2008, not aware that in a few short months SolFocus´ founding CEO would be ousted and replaced with a Lockheed Martin alum, whose first order of business was reducing staff levels (which had grown to about 150 people) worldwide, leading to the evaporation of Steve´s new position in September.
While Steve had an offer to return to SolFocus USA, as well as to work for other bay area CPV companies, for personal reasons he and his wife were not ready to move back, and he chose to join the CPV team at UPM, where he has stayed for the last decade. As the only staff engineer in a ~10 person group composed of faculty members, doctoral students, and post docs, Steve plays an important role in the interface with industry, and is responsible for all industrial collaborations. Steve is responsible for negotiating, closing, and delivery contracts for characterization, design, and consulting work for companies involved in CPV worldwide, as well as technology transfer, including CPV solar simulator of which 15 units (worth 4.5 M€) have been installed worldwide. In his time at the UPM, Steve has become recognized as an expert in CPV systems and design through his participation in scientific conferences and standardization activities of the IEC TC82 WG7. He authored the Chapter on CPV Module Design in the Handbook of Concentrator Photovoltaic Thechnology (Wiley, 2016). Recently he has also become an important part of forming consortia and preparing proposals for EU and national funding, and was an instrumental part of a recent successful bid for a 15M€ EU project for a micro-CPV pilot line (to be announced in September) of which the UPM budget is 1.1M€ (over 3 years).

Felipe has been around energy since childhood due to his father being an Exxon executive as well as an innovator in the oil field industry across the world.
After completing his studies in Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. Cano moved back to his native country of Colombia to work as vice-president for Latin America Regions, a business development of DRILLEXCO (a family owned drilling oil & gas company). During his time at Drillexco, Felipe mastered closing land concessions (leases) with multiple Latin American governments and private parties, garnering him with the expertise in complex polices, form- outs and lobbying. During Felipe’s involvement, the company acquired over 1 MM hectares of land with a contract to drill 2500 wells.
After the 5-year experience in the oil, gas and energy industry, Mr. Cano moved back to the US to found and manage Sterling Securities, an equity market hedge fund. Sterling Securities managed private wealth portfolios for Latin America, Caribbean and European clients as a registered broker-dealer regulated by the SEC (Security Exchange Commission). As CEO, Felipe Cano oversaw the raising of investment capital; transaction control of trading desk reports; compliance issues; aspects of technology and connectivity transactions; and trading floor management. This experience provided Felipe the entry point to the creation of Eurolink Network in Madrid, Spain.
In 1998, Mr. Cano moved to Spain to take a new step forward, having the vision to connect and unify both European and United States stock exchanges under one platform and protocol, targeting to create the smart grid of the equity market and stock trading in a bilateral, single network. In 2000 Mr. Cano co-founded ECN Access Europe S.A. in partnership with Island ECN, today, a Reuters company. ECN Access was the first technology hub in Europe to route the first block of institutional order flows from a European Bank directly to the NASDAQ electronic exchange without intermediaries: “the first smart grid ever built”. The ECN (Electronic Communication Networks), of the 90’s was and are today, places in which traders of all levels, (private and institutional), match equity and other financial products within their own order books. This was the democratization of the stock exchange.
Today, in a similar manner, Community Electricity.IO, Inc. is building “the NASDAQ ” of the clean energy field. In 2003, Eurolink Network Inc., (an ECN Access Europe S.A. spin-off), was acquired by NYFIX (NYFX), a leading Wall Street listed company with a market cap of 1.2 billion dollars. Eurolink’s network order flow account handled more than one billion shares per day, equivalent to 30% of the total volume of the institutional European equity order flow to the USA markets, all built under one platform and the “FIX” protocol: (Financial Information Exchange).
Following his vision to create a digital market for the energy sector, Felipe moved to Barcelona and founded Eco&Urbana targeting to develop a platform to start the experimentation of what are today’s microgrids. Felipe Cano spent two years aggregating the most talented team in the industry to co-develop company products and services which integrate smart energy education, smart mobilization and smart finance, in combination with energy software, hardware and network solutions, specifically, microgrid schemes: an open and transparent transformation of the energy industry.
Since 2010 until today, Felipe has been developing a Community Low Carbon Development Protocol and is the founder of CommunityElectricty.IO, Inc., the company which will implement the first version of the protocol in partnership with top energy companies around the world. Today, CommunityElectricity has co-designed with The Energy Coalition, a master implementation plan and has been awarded a grant by the California Energy Commission to implement the largest and the first-of-its kind decarbonization by electrification protocol using distributed electricity resources, carbon emissions management, blockchain, AI and IoT all connected under one plug-and-play platform that produces and broadcasts impact in real time: the future of the digital prosumer decarbonization economy.
Felipe graduated with honors from Valley Forge Military Academy, later acquiring an M.S. (Master of Science) from Cambridge College in Boston, Massachusetts. He had the opportunity to live in a dozen cities around the world, making him an extraordinary visionary with a real pulse of the planet’s social, environmental and economic behavior, as well as its future needs.
Dr Morales have an intense experience in the telecommunications industry since 1976. Speaker at over 1,200 courses, seminars and conferences nationally and internationally. His professional work has been recognized, among others, by the “Ethernet Academy”, the “New York Academy of Sciences” and “Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering”.
Dr. Morales is member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and, as a “balloting group member,” he works on Ethernet development as part of the LAN MAN Standards Committee P802.3 of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE–SA).
Also Dr, Morales is the Inventor of the new Communications Architecture “UETS” (Universal Ethernet Telecommunications Service), a radical technological innovation that overcomes the limitations of the current Internet, making possible its extension to the areas of Security, Energy and Industry.
Mr. Winn has developed a detailed understanding of the technical, regulatory and financial issues involved and possesses the knowledge and capabilities to develop and implement cyber secure command, control, communication, and metering for energy retrofit projects to ensure technical and financial viability with Measurement and Verification performance reporting..
Mr. Winn has been responsible for the identification and development of many metering and conservation or cogeneration projects with commercial, industrial, institutional and government clients. Mr. Winn has developed and implemented many utility grade metering and sub-metering projects along with the real-time two-way cyber secure communications to metering and supervisory control and data acquisition systems. Results from these projects allowed end-clients to maximize overall benefits to clients ranged from energy saving techniques to design, construction and implementation of real-time metering and building automation systems. In fulfilling these responsibilities, Mr. Winn has directed a multi‑discipline team of engineers to design the hardware, firmware, cyber secure communication and HMI software to provide the complete ADRES Control solution.
Craig Perkins provides leadership, oversight and strategic input at TEC for all contracts, programs and policy work. Prior to joining TEC in 2008, he was Director of Environmental and Public Works Management for the City of Santa Monica, where he served for over 25 years. Craig has extensive experience designing and implementing energy programs and policies, which involve outreach strategies to key stakeholder groups, including creation of the Regional Energy Networks, implementation of Energy Upgrade California in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles County Southern California Regional Energy Center Pilot, directing Santa Monica’s award-winning Sustainable City Plan, Solar Santa Monica Program, and Energy Independence Plan.
Javier Rosero Garcia was born in Potosí, Colombia, in 1978. He received his BSC in Electrical Engineering from the Universidad of Valle, Cali, Colombia, in 2002. He worked for construction and maintenance of power systems and substations in Bogotá, Colombia, between 2002 and 2004.
He received a PhD degree from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2007. Dr Rosero received the IEEE AESS Harry Rowe Mimno award for excellence in technical communications for 2007 from the Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) IEEE 2007.
He worked with Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), Barcelona, Spain, from 2007 to 2009 providing service and technical support for drives for industrial and windmill systems. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Universidad Nacional de Colombia’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department in Bogota. Dr. Rosero has published more than 60 referred journal and conference papers.
His research interests are focused on the areas of modelling, diagnosis and control of electrical machines and drives, electric mobility, microgrids and smart grids.

Another relevant project under development is the replacement of 100% of City of Santarem Bus service fleet by Electric Buses, operated by EVShare in a PPP with City Government.
